WHO WE ARE-

KiddiCode Project runs live coding clubs online for children from black ethnic minorities whose families are on low income

KiddiCode Project was born from a thought of wanting to benefit children who are isolated and overlooked by the society both monetarily and socially. A small group of like minded people got together and set up a non-profit organisation, KiddiCode Project. Our aim is to teach coding to children whose families might not be able to afford equipment, internet connection and classes.

KIDDICODE CODING CLUB-

In our coding club your child will learn to code in language called Python (nothing to do with snakes!). Python is easy to learn and widely used in various applications, such as apps, robots, drones, websites, data analysis etc.

We learn by making fun little programs such as mini games, calculators and quizzes, and we even learn to draw with code!

Coding is full of fun “Oh, this is how it’s done!” discovery moments. It promotes your child’s problem solving and organisation skills, improves their attention to detail, resilience, mathematic and even grammar skills. It’s creative and fun! Children can share their screen and solve problems together adding to their social and team player skills.

Coding Club is suitable for children 9-16 years of age (from school year 5 onwards) who are comfortable with using computers. We encourage especially girls to come along as it’s a great hobby!

HOW AND WHEN-

Your child will be enrolled on our classes from September for a full school year, so they get a real long term benefit from learning a new skill. You have a choice of week day afternoons and Saturday classes and our clubs run term time.

Our clubs are completely free for your child to attend. We can also help you to source second hand equipment and an internet connection if you don’t have the required tools to attend our classes.

WHY SHOULD YOU LEARN CODING?

Coding is a great stepping stone into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) subjects for children. Children who are interested in gaming and building games will benefit knowing the code as it’s basis to all functionality in the games. For them altering the code is a door to new creative discoveries.

Coding is regarded as one of the most future proof skills to have. Schools in many leading educational countries have already integrated coding in their curriculum and many are looking to include it. Coding will be a large part of our lives in the future in many ways.

Demand for coders is increasing as the world becomes more technology driven. Knowing coding is helpful even in non-tech professions. You might become an entrepreneur who can adjust their website with code or be a scientist developing new equipment with a team and it’s useful to know how it all works.

OUR CURRICULUM-

Our curriculum is developed based on Finnish university coding courses, and adapted to suit children’s learning.

During the enrolment period (one school year), your child will learn all essential concepts of programming. The course is divided into five modules.

Your child will learn programming principles including what is an algorithm, variables, degugging, loop and conditional structures, error handling, modules, files and functions, object orientated programming etc. Basically everything that any adult would learn when they attend a coding course. Completing the course adds actual real world value to your child’s learning.

Your child will receive a certificate on completion of each module and a full certificate in the end of the course.

WHY IS KIDDICODE DIFFERENT-

In most children’s coding platforms, such as Scratch, users place ready made blocks of code in desired order to make a program in a game like format instead of writing the code. We at KiddiCode teach your child to write the actual code called syntax.

Why does it matter? In real life applications, websites etc. the code is read and written as syntax, actual code, not in blocks. Your child will learn how to use written code and is able to apply it in practise. They will discover how smallest of details build a functioning program. Once you learn Python and its concepts, it is easier to learn other coding languages as principals remain the same.

We post little coding challenges on Facebook so your child can try it out even before joining the club!
