KiddiCode Project is a not-for-profit organisation set up to provide free coding tuition for children from black ethnic minorities from low income families.

OUR AIM –

Children (and adults) from black ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by the lack of opportunities and discrimination due to wider societal issues such as unconscious bias and institutional racism to mention few. We want every child to have equal opportunity to learn a skill regardless of how society sees them or their family finances. Coding as a hobby can be unattainable if your family is not able to provide required equipment, internet access and pay for the tuition, yet it is a valuable skill to learn in order to benefit for the future opportunities.

HOW –

We provide children a quality tuition in a safe, fun and engaging environment. A meaningful activity has a positive impact on a child’s mental wellbeing. Coding improves their logical thinking, problem solving skills, attention to detail and even improves school performance.
We organise weekly classes for the duration of a school year for each child who is enrolled into our program, so that the learning can have a real long term positive impact on the child’s life.

We can help to source a second hand computer, internet connection and other equipment for children, who don’t have the required equipment. We will also help to set up the computer and install all the required software so that the child can attend the class independently without the need of parental involvement. Children will benefit from being able to keep the equipment after the course is finished and use them for school work etc.

Our curriculum is based on a university coding program. We have adapted and made it fun to suit children. After finishing all modules, the children will have virtually the same skills as any adult who complete a coding course.

WHY –

Programming is one of the important future skills. Career opportunities for people with programming knowledge are vast and continuously increasing as the world becomes more and more reliant on technology. Where other ethnic minority groups are well represented in tech, with around 15% being from ethnic minorities in UK, only 3% are black, so there is a clear underrepresentation in the field. This is especially highlighted in London, where 13% of population identify as black but only the same 3% professionals in tech industry are black according to UK Tech Workplace Equality Report

Whilst we can only have a small impact on the wider reasons behind the gap, we can do something. We can give children the spark! We can ensure that children have an introduction to programming at early age, after which they can further develop their interest and even pursue a well paid career in the field. We make extra effort to get as many girls as possible involved as coding is a great hobby and career for girls in this male dominant area.

Above all we want every single black child to have same opportunities as their counterparts and we encourage them to explore and fulfil their potential.

SUSTAINABILITY-

We worry about our planet’s health and try and minimise the impact we have on it. We run on 100% renewable energy. We choose suppliers who care about the environment. For example our web host also uses only renewable energy sources and plants trees for us, we only buy from companies who don’t use plastic for their deliveries etc.

For consumables and electronics we make long lasting choices, that minimise energy consumption and that can be fixed if they fail. We pay attention to materials and choose things that don’t use plastic and can be recycled after their service. We believe in reusing and second hand usage. From the waste we can’t avoid, we recycle everything we possibly can, which is around 90% at the moment.

We continuously try and find new ways to help our planet. We hope you do too!

BEHIND KIDDICODE PROJECT-

KiddiCode Project was born from a thought of wanting to benefit a group of children that are isolated and overlooked by the society both monetarily and socially. Having witnessed the injustice people from black ethnic minority go through every day due to none of their own fault, it was an obvious choice to start working towards being able to provide opportunity to learn new skills to those children from low income families. So a small group of like minded people gathered and set up KiddiCode Project.

We are passionate about making a difference, creating opportunities and grow in order to provide our classes to as many children as possible.

We are experienced in working with children at schools running various after school clubs in school premises along with online clubs for children all over the world through our sister company KiddiClubs – We currently have children attending our clubs from tens of countries! Check kiddiclubs.com out!

Everyone from our team with direct contact with children has a valid, enhanced DBS criminal background check and a safeguarding certificate.

Join us, learn new life skills and have fun!
